Worship service in interfaith participation celebrates volunteers

Under the motto "Berlin says thank you", the ecumenical service in front of the Gedächtniskirche under the patronage of the Governing Mayor Michael Müller on Sunday celebrates the voluntary commitment in the time of the pandemic.

When? 22 August 2021, 10 am

Where? Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtnis-Kirche (open air), Berlin-Charlottenburg

Corona regulations for outdoor events apply. Prior rapid testing is strongly recommended. Medical masks must be worn at the venue.

In a word of greeting, the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Michael Müller, will express thanks to the volunteers on behalf of the State of Berlin.

The Protestant General Superintendent Ulrike Trautwein will give the sermon. Next to her, parish worker Lissy Eichert will represent the Catholic Archdiocese of Berlin. The Jewish cantor Esther Hirsch will also participate, as will the Imam Mohamed Taha Sabri, plus volunteers from various fields.

The service will feature music by the gospel choir Inspired and the ensemble Jericho Brass Berlin.

Special thanks go to all those people who volunteered in a special way, even under the difficult conditions of the pandemic: In the vaccination centres and in the distribution of food; with many creative ideas in the neighbourhood help, which was particularly important during the lockdown, or in sports clubs with online offers and in keeping in touch with children and young people, in church and mosque congregations, which provided information in their communities, at the railway station mission and in all the many voluntary areas of responsibility, where the work had to continue and continued despite contact restrictions and home offices.

Berlin was named the "European Volunteer Capital" for 2021 by the Brussels-based European Volunteer Centre. Many have personally brought this to life. Many show what volunteering can achieve - and how good it does.

The service is co-initiated by the Berliner Tagesspiegel with its newsletter "Ehrensache".
