House of One builds a Sukkah

Sukkot, the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles, is one of the most important festivals in the Jewish calendar. This year, it will be celebrated from 25 September to 2 October.

To mark the occasion, we are building **a sukkah, a temporary hut**, on our construction site in the heart of Berlin – and, as is customary at the House of One, in a Jewish-Muslim-Christian collaboration. Of course, the work will be carried out under expert Jewish guidance. We will be hosting various events in the sukkah (see the programme below for dates and times).

What is Sukkot?

Sukkot commemorates the exodus from Egypt. During the festival, many Jewish people build a sukkah, a temporary hut. It symbolises the makeshift shelters in which the Israelites lived during their journey. The sukkah is therefore open on one side, and its roof is not completely covered. It is usually made from branches and should be open enough for those inside to look through it and see the stars in the sky.

Together, we will build and decorate our sukkah and turn it into a place of encounter for one week. Through workshops, conversations, a live podcast and shared activities, we want to learn more about the Jewish festival of Sukkot, engage in dialogue and celebrate together.

Whether you are already familiar with Sukkot or are hearing about it for the first time, come along, get involved and discover this special festival with us.
