After the antisemitic terrorist attack in Sydney, Rabbi Andreas Nachama, Imam Kadir Sanci and Pastor Marion Gardei expressed their shock and dismay at the attack. People were assaulted because they wanted to celebrate the beginning of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah.
“The attack in Sydney is antisemitism – but it is also an expression of hostility toward our values and our civilization,” said Rabbi Andreas Nachama. At the same time, the courageous and selfless actions of a Muslim family man, who subdued one of the attackers and was himself seriously injured, demonstrate that these values are not dependent on religion or origin.
Imam Kadir Sanci emphasized his deep distress over the attack and expressed his solidarity with the families of the victims and with Jewish communities around the world. Antisemitic hatred, he said, is not directed solely against Jews but threatens peaceful coexistence as a whole.
Against this backdrop, Rabbi Nachama, Imam Sanci and Pastor Gardei invite the public to an interfaith prayer for peace. Together, they wish to pause, remember the victims and the injured, and set a sign against hatred, violence and exclusion.
