Interfaith food donation for food banks in Germany

Pfarrer Hohberg, Rabbiner Nachama, Kadir Sanci vom House of One und Fatih Ates von Time to Help e.V.

Rabbi Andreas Nachama, Pastor Gregor Hohberg and Imam Kadir Sanci from the House of One handed over more than two tons of food to Berliner Tafel e.V. this week. The clergymen are the patrons of the interfaith fundraising campaign "So that no plate remains empty". Initiator was the aid organization Time to Help e.V..

"We have taken on the patronage in these difficult times to draw attention to the important work of the Tafel and the other initiatives involved in supporting the vulnerable in our society," said Imam Kadir Sanci of the House of One in Berlin. "Action is prayer, fervent and effective. Please act and help."

Helping people in need

Together with "Time to Help e.V.", money will be collected in the coming weeks in around 30 cities nationwide, together with local associations and actors. These donations will be used to buy flour, pasta or canned goods and hand them over to the Tafel distribution points.

Pastor Gregor Hohberg, co-founder of the House of One said, "Helping people in need, that is deeply inscribed in the religions. No one should go hungry, everyone in need should be helped - regardless of faith, origin or culture." In Berlin, in addition to Time to Help e.V., Aktion für Flüchtlingshilfe e.V, Femia e.V, Kubik e.V, Institut für Islamische Information e.V, KuKiez - Kiez der Kulturen e.V, Kultur Akademie - Träger Mensch und Bildung gGmbH and Spandauer Kultur- und Bildungshaus e.V supported the fundraiser.

"People and religions standing together"

The action is a reaction to rising prices and the thus resulting growing need in households. Sabine Werth, founder and chairwoman of Berliner Tafel e.V. said, "We are very pleased and thank you very much for the food donations. They are not only a sign of support, but also a sign of people and religions standing together successfully."

Following the successful collaboration in Berlin, the "So that no plate remains empty" campaign will be expanded to other cities. The next stop is Hamburg. "We want to help and thus also draw attention to certain values, values such as solidarity, charity, cohesion," said Fatih Ates of Time to Help e.V..

180,000 people use the Berlin food bank

Since the Russian attack on Ukraine in February, the Tafel says crowds at its distribution points have nearly doubled. In Berlin alone, between 72,000 and 80,000 people come to the 47 LAIB und SEELE distribution points each month. LAIB und SEELE is a campaign of Berliner Tafel e.V., the churches and rbb (Rundfunk Berlin Brandenburg). In total, the Berliner Tafel supports more than 180,000 people affected by poverty in the city per month.
