Obituary on Imam Kobine

Zentralafrikanische Republik ZAR République Centrafricaine RCA Central African Republique CAR Imam Kobine Layama Christian Muslims

A human being is irreplaceable. This is a popular phrase, but often it is not much more than a gesture of politeness. But for some people it is true. For people in particular, who are committed to the community in which they live in an unmistakable way. One such person was Imam Oumar Kobine Layama.  -- Version française ci-dessous --

The Muslim cleric, project ambassador of the House of One, President of the Islamic Council of the Central African Republic and co-founder of the local Interfaith Platform (PCRC), died unexpectedly on Sunday, November 29, 2020, in the capital Bangui. We remember him with great sadness and gratitude.

Peacemaker between Christians and Muslims

When, from the end of 2012, the fighting of the enemy alliances, the so-called Seleka and the anti-Balaka, plunged the Central African Republic into a civil war and fighting was often interpreted as acts of violence between Muslims and Christians, it was Imam Oumar Kobine Layama and his Christian brothers in office, Archbishop Nzapalainga and Pastor Guérékoyamé-Gbangou, who, often at the risk of their lives, confronted the rebel groups, denied the fighting a religious legitimation and advocated steps towards peace.

In 2013, the year of the worst fighting, when Imam Layama found protection in the home of Archbishop Nzapalainga who welcomed the Imam and his family, the three clergymen founded the inter-religious "Platform of Religious Denominations in the Central African Republic" (PCRC). It was a sign of living understanding between Christians and Muslims in the midst of all the violence and an energetic departure, carried by the hope for a more peaceful future for the country. Thus the platform has grown, with the center in Bangui, the branch offices in the provinces, women's work, inter-religious radio and much more.

Lost Generation of the Civil War

Throughout all these years until the end - recently re-elected President of the Islamic Council - Imam Layama was the tireless initiator and companion of these small steps towards peace, quite unpretentiously and therein a wonderful interlocutor. In our conversations he always had the youth at heart, the, as he said, "lost generation of the civil war", connected with his concern to show this generation again meaningful life perspectives and to take care for their elementary bases of life. What is needed is a rebirth of social peace from the unity of the religions in order to create a counterweight in the face of all divisions, hatred and inequality.

Following this conviction, the work of Imam Layama has never been on a symbolic level, but has been linked to the concrete tasks of humanitarian interventions and aid as well as the reconstruction of the state.

Winner of the Aachen Peace Prize

On the part of the House of One, we have been in continuous and enriching contact with Kobine Layama since the end of 2015. The Imam and the Archbishop had become aware of the House of One during their visit to Germany on the occasion of the presentation of the Aachen Peace Prize and approached us with the wish to start a similar project in Bangui. A "National House of Peace and Religions" should slowly, step by step, grow into a symbolically protected crystallization place of national peace efforts, commemoration and reconciliation.

We worked intensively together on this, thinking together the religious traditions and confessions with the real problems and social questions, in order to change society from a religious attitude. This point of action has always been important to Imam Layama, the consequence of not letting oneself and the others fall asleep in an irresponsibility - a beautiful formulation from the laudation at the awarding of the Peace Prize 2015.

For the House of One the project of the "House of Peace and Religions" in Bangui is a very central partner project. The other milestones in the joint planning and reflection with Imam Layama were imminent. As a sign of our solidarity, we also approached the Imam a year ago with the request to help lay the foundation stone for the House of One in Berlin in spring 2020. We were very happy about his promise, but the Corona Pandemic forced us to postpone the ceremony until next spring.

Laying of the foundation stone of the House of One

Just in the last week we started the preparations for the laying of the foundation stone again and it was beyond any discussion to invite Imam Layama again and renew the request for his participation in the laying of the foundation stone. It will not come to that now.

We will have to take up and continue his ideas and his courage, his wisdom and thoughtfulness in the difficult process of small peace steps, knowing that this is exactly what he would have wanted.
It will not be possible to replace Imam Layama, the gap he leaves behind is frighteningly large, but probably the Imam would have said with his very own, profound smile that not only he himself is irreplaceable, but every person in this world, no matter what religion, is an unmistakable creature of God.

For Imam Oumar Kobine Layama, his further fate may now lie with God, the Merciful:

We belong to Allah and to Him we return. (Sura 2:156)

Hommage à l‘Imam Oumar Kobine Layama

†  29 novembre 2020

House of One

(Sourate 2:156)
